Hydraulic forepoling shield drives caved-in tunnel drift
Forepoling shield equipped with seven 3 ft wide hydraulic poling plates that extend 4 ft ahead of hood is used for digging 15 1/2 ft diam tunnel through exceptionally poor ground in Minneapolis, Minn; shield pushes itself against face with two of its 100-ton jacks; curved feet of jacks fit snugly into web of 5-in. ring beams; shield is shoved forward in sandstone at rate of 35 ft/day.
