Amsterdam road tunnel
Better connection between northern suburbs of Amsterdam and main part of city which are separated by Het IJ, area of water forming Port of Amsterdam, was required; tunnel will consist of double concrete tube built up of sections, approaches being constructed as caissons while center sections will be floated into position and lowered into previously dug trench; because of poor subsoil, structure will be supported on large number of in situ concrete piles which will reach depth of 80 m; tunnel will form part of city roadway system including outer ring road.
