Experimental tunnel constructed at Camp Tuto, Greenland by U S Army Snow, Ice and Permafrost Research Establishment (USA SIPRE) to determine feasibility of underground excavation in permafrost; in construction of portal in summer months, in partly thawed soil, support was used, but no support was necessary in other portions of tunnel; drilling and blasting in frozen soil and rock; steel arches with protective lagging were used to protect workers.
