Critical commentary and review; alkalies have always been present in cements; accelerated laboratory tests showing presence of alkalies in cement have little bearing on performance of concrete over long period of years; author contends that, with one or two exceptions, there is no definite proof that cement containing 1.5% of total alkalies is inferior to cement which contains only 0.3% total alkalies.
