In work of entirely novel nature factor of safety becomes doubtful quantity; author instances case of metal deep-sea diving suit in which buckling collapse of cylindrical suit sections is criterion of design; buckling is preceded by reduction of elastic modulus of material which must be taken into account in assessing safe working load; author makes plea for modified terminology for factor of safety.
