Large-scale experiments in rock mechanics
Deformation of rock under pressure was measured in 100 m long exploration tunnels driven at various levels in valley flanks of Verzasca dam; pressure of 12 to 60 kg/sq cm was exerted by means of hydraulic cylinders on steel and concrete plates affixed to opposite walls of tunnel; test results indicate that gneissic rock behaves under pressure like elastic material; diagrams of deformation and elasticity moduli were obtained for various depths inside rock wall and at various elevations above valley floor.
