Cerro tunnels through 100,000 gpm
Two tunnels are being driven, each with projected length of over 6 mi, to drain and ventilate Casapalca mine on western slope of Peruvian Andes; flow of water in mine had reached maximum of 110,000 gpm; in one shaft, temperature was 120 F and hot water inflow to shaft reached 10,000 gpm; tunnel for drainage of hot water, is 6 ft lower than haulage and ventilation tunnel which is driven on parallel course; tunnels measure 10×10 ft and are driven at grade of 0.3%.
