Stress-wave propagation in axiallysymmetric test specimens
When metal is stressed, dislocations pile against obstacle; if they suddenly break through obstacle then small impulsive stress wave, known as acoustic emission, is generated on metal surface; attempts are made to correlate this phenomenon to onset of yielding of tensile-test specimen; as preliminary study for proper design of acoustic emission detecting system, theoretical and experimental investigation of stress-wave propagation through test specimen, due to stress-wave source similar to acoustic emission, is presented.
