Rock excavation and consolidation of underground power station in Scottish highlands
Excavation and tunneling work in construction of 30,000 ft long low pressure tunnel feeding turbines of Deanie and Culligran underground power plants in Scotland is described; in surge shaft area, rock consists generally of quartzose and micaceous granulites, while around underground machine hall it is composed for most part of psammitic granulites with some pelitic bands; rock characteristics caused provision of two roofs over machine hall, first consisting of steel arch ribs and concrete infilling of overbreak, and second of mass concrete; rock had to be extensively rockbolted and cement grouted, and walls, originally intended to remain bare, lined with concrete.
