Experimental remotely-controlled hazard warning sign system on 26 mi of M.5 (Birmingham-Bristol) Motorway in Worcestershire, England is featured; system consists of 22 illuminated signs, spaced at approximately 2-mi intervals on each roadway; each sign contains alternative legends -- "Skid Risk," "Accident" and "Fog" -- in letters 1 ft high; signs are about 11 ft wide and mounted on steel platforms behind hard shoulders, their tops are about 12 ft above level of road; they are designed so that legends are invisible until lights are switched on.
