Comparison is made of skin strength and skin stress, ratio of which is decisive for crack formation during ingot solidification; systematic classification is proposed for skin stresses that are influenced by teeming procedure, except for stresses caused by structural transformations, which are of metallurgical nature, and for skin strength influenced only by metallurgical factors.
