Some pile loading tests in stiff clay
Loading tests on 2 timber piles and Franki pile, embedded principally in stiff clay, were carried out; analysis of results appear to indicate that adhesion of piles is fully mobilized undrained shear strength of clay; reasons for this apparent anomaly with data reported in literature are suggested pore water pressures set up in soil adjacent to piles during load testing were very small and calculations in terms of effective stresses, indicated that ratio of horizontal to vertical effective stress at failure is approximately 1.2.
