Modulus of elasticity of Leda clay from field measurements
Construction of Ottawa Sewage Treatment Plant provided opportunity to measure bottom heave in 2 large excavations in clay; with gages installed prior to excavation, elastic heave, swelling, and heave due to pile driving were measured in excavation 31.5 ft deep; using Poisson's ratio of 0.4, modulus of elasticity determined from field measurements compared favorably with initial tangent modulus from best unconfined compression strength tests; in other excavation drop in groundwater table produced elastic settlement that exceeded elastic heave resulting from unloading by excavation.
