Earth-mound form slashes cost of concrete dome
Mound of earth served as form for thin-shell dome in construction of roof for auditorium in Albuquerque, NM, eliminating formwork, speeding and simplifying concrete placing; contractor took advantage of hilly job site, shaped native material into mound, poured concrete on top, and then excavated underneath; resulting thin-shell dome had rough underside, but, most of it was covered later with acoustical tile.
