Watertight primary linings cut cost of tunneling sewer
Development of new tunneling techniques on 6-mi sewer construction in New York City to offset higher labor costs, includes unusual watertight primary lining as heading advances; main sewer bore lining is made of cast iron ring segments with machined faces; smaller tunnel spur lining is steel liner plate prefitted at mill with neoprene rubber gaskets on all edges; gasketed plate lining proved superior in test without air pressure to previously installed ungasketed plate lining; both linings received identical reinforcement at joints; details on mining behind Mayo shields, air supply and concreting avoiding water pressure and percolation.
