Failure of embankment founded on Varved clay
During construction of 19 ft high roadway embankment at New Liskeard, northern Ontario, on varved clay, failure involving half width of embankment occurred, extending for length of 350 ft; investigation was carried out, including continuous sampling and in situ vane tests at 2 ft intervals to locate failure zone; stability analyses were carried out both for failed and stable side of embankment; instrumentation and results of survey; embankment was successfully reconstructed to its former grade by adding berm of half its height.
