Asphalt membrane prescribed for swelling subgrade soils
Six test areas were set up on 5-mi section of Interstate 70, north of Grand Junction, Colo for trying different granular materials and hydrated lime treatments; two cuts were to be treated with asphalt membrane; catalytically blown 50-60 penetration asphalt was applied to subgrade previously smooth-rolled with flat wheeled roller; total of 70.2 tons of asphalt was applied to test areas and excellent coverage was obtained; resulting membrane was tough and pliable with thickness of about 1/4 in.
