Pitch-bitumen mixtures
Laboratory study showed that residual bitumen could be made to oxidize at suitable rate by adding proportion of coal-tar pitch; pitches chosen were those from vertical-retort tar and pitch from low-temperature-carbonization tar; after 12 yr under very heavy traffic surfacings were in good condition and there was no sign that use of pitch-bitumen has had any adverse effect on durability of asphalt; pitch-bitumen binder used in road experiment described was prepared by simple stirring, in binder-heater tank, of hot bitumen to which molten pitch was added; further developments in application of pitch-bitumen mixtures in Great Britain.
