Plans for reducing shoaling southwest pass, Mississippi river
Extensive shoaling, primarily near ends of jetties but also throughout jetty channel, necessitated frequent maintenance dredging and essentially continuous dredging during high river stages; model study was conducted to determine effectiveness of jetty extensions and channel realignments and contractions for elimination or reduction of dredging; tests indicated that plans involving curved realignment for jetty channel and relocation of bar channel upstream from downstream ends of jetties would greatly reduce shoaling for authorized 42-ft deep channel; reducing channel width from 800 to 600 ft would also be beneficial.
