Flexure and load-carrying capacity of slender piles in soft soil
Theoretical studies carried out on flexure of fully and partially embedded piles in uniform soil and in soil having stiffness proportional to depth below surface; it is shown that for depth of embedment greater than 1 ft distance, which depends on relative stiffness of soil and pile, flexural properties and buckling characteristics are virtually constant; it is also shown that buckling frequently occurs only in top half-wave; methods of estimating soil stiffness are presented, and it is mentioned that in very soft soils having shear strength of order of 1 or 2 psi, 1 ft is of order of 16 to 19 pile diameters for typical piles.
