Lining of penstock shaft and pressure tunnel of Kaunertal power plant
2 km long 3.3 m ID penstock works under pressure head of 1000 m; newly developed radial press enabled reliable determination of rock elasticity and design of lining with practically uniform safety factor; new patented grouting method (lateral instead of radial injection) reduced lining stresses to 76% of those calculated; special joint design made stress-relief annealing of 50 mm thick steel plate penstock unnecessary; 830 m long 4.40 m diam horizontal pressure tunnel was lined with 5 mm thick Aldur 35 steel sheets.
