Driving of Avai tunnel at Litani development in Lebanon; history, sequence of operations as well as methods used in driving 17 km long, 3.40 m diam tunnel of 25 cu m/sec water discharge are described; horseshoe tunnel cross section was adopted; reinforced and unreinforced circular profile was used when passing through poor ground; great difficulties encountered during work, caused by poor geological conditions and groundwater pressure up to 75 bars called for intense drainage as well as for soil stabilization by chemicals and cement injections.
