Search for suitable refractories for open hearth furnace checkers
Fired periclase-forsterite and magnesite-chromite, also high alumina bricks, proved to be most suitable; unfired bricks, especially from forsterite, have poor heat exchange characteristics which become worse during service; their mechanical strength and thermal stability are also insufficient, particularly when checkers are flushed with water.
