New concept for nuclear reactor containment
Arrangement for primary containment is proposed; new approach is in making large concrete mass act as integral structural part of primary containment; this is done by embedding in concrete, prior to its placement, high strength steel strands in configuration of energy absorbing basket; high-strength steel strands are placed in sheaths which prevent bonding to concrete; tension applied at one point is manifested in entire length of strand.
