Principles of method for determining compressive stresses in rocks by means of radioactive radiation; original density or mass-thickness of rock alter under compressive stress; it is possible to determine conditions under which changes in density or mass-thickness result in maximum changes in absorption of gamma-rays; during tests, cylindrical specimens of iron ore and mortar were subjected to single- or multiaxial stresses; absorption of radiation is correlated with prevalent stresses.
