Effect of blasting on strength of rock mass; sensitivity of mass to impact depends on shape and orientation of joints and particularly on degree of separation of joint swarms; investigations both in laboratory and on in-situ rock mass show that, in many blasts, effects penetrate to much greater depth than generally assumed; choice between various possible blasting techniques must be made very carefully, in areas where rock mass is to have bearing or supporting function.
