Design and construction of Hampton roads tunnel
Details of tunnel having length of 7479 ft between portals, of which 6860 ft are made up of 23 sunken tube sections, each about 300 ft long; remaining 310 ft on each end, which also include foundations for ventilation buildings, were built by cut-and-cover methods in open trenches; 33 ft diam tube sections are of welded 5/16 in. thick steel reinforced plate construction with welded outside stiffeners, outside concrete coating, and 18 in. thick inner reinforced concrete lining.
