Note on free vortices observed in scale-model tests of bellmouth overflow spillway
Phenomenon of vortex may seriously reduce discharging capacity and may lead to entrainment of air in large quantities and violent fluctuations of flow; experiments made on 1/26.7 scale model of bellmouth overflow show effect of changing shape of embrasure enclosing bellmouth and sensitivity of vortex in relation to conditions in testing tank.
