New tunnelling method for construction of Metro Toronto's humber valley trunk sewer
Two mi sewer will serve 50,000 acres with 350,000 residents; to avoid noise and blast-vibrations unique 60-ton, 25-ft long machine bores steadily through rock 50 to 100 ft below ground surface; sewer is of concrete, circular in section, and 8 3/4 ft in diam, constructed in tunnel of 10 3/4 ft diam; concrete introduced through 10 in. diam holes drilled from surface; spoil disposal by conveyors and mine-train.
