Large "shell" dome
Doubly curved 125×125 ft concrete shell, built in Wimbledon, England, to cover two tennis courts, is supported by four concrete columns; stress analysis and design of shell; expanded metal formwork instead of timber used for roof; boundary members were tied arches, ties comprising prestressing cables placed in ducts; grouting of prestressing of roof detailed; columns are provided with roller bearings, and supported on friction piles.
