Martinez-Benicia Bridge
Double-track railroad bridge with seven through-truss spans, 5603 ft total length, constructed by Southern Pacific Co, to replace train ferry across Carquinez Strait between Benicia and Port Costa, Calif; design of piers to resist earthquake shock; creation of artificial islands of sand within steel shells; temporary use of one of permanent deck spans as falsework.
