Piles in permafrost for bridge foundations
Cooperative study to improve design criteria for piles in permafrost by extending existing data and criteria on installation methods, bearing capacity and frost heave control techniques; performance of six bridges is monitored by monthly observations of ground temperature assemblies and vertical movement points; soil conditions, design considerations, typical pile driving records and construction details of three bridges near Fairbanks, Alaska; pile load tests of driven H-piles, with and without shoes, at two bridge sites are compared; direct means of preventing detrimental displacement from frost heaving by providing air space beneath pile cap and use of antiheaving oil-wax-soil mixture.
