Prestressed foundation resists roof thrusts
Foundation problem of Holy Trinity Church near Pittsburgh, Pa, arises from fact that roof structure is unsymmetrical about all centerlines but one; thrusts are resisted partly by steel ties located below grade between piers and partly by internal shear resistance of piers; ties (cables) were prestressed to keep piers from being overstressed and were placed at varying elevations at four piers in order to balance overturning forces caused by shell thrusts; stress values, converted from strain measurements, were higher than would be expected due to temperature differential itself (3860 psi at gage No. 1); to prevent overstressing of structure during decentering of formwork, it was necessary to shorten shores in progressive increments.
