Scale effects in swirling flow
Results of study of vortex behavior in open-channel hydraulic models; effects of model scale on steady well-developed vortices were investigated experimentally by comparing behavior of three sizes of geometrically similar models; models had sharp-edged circular orifices with diam of 2, 4, and 6 in., respectively; general dissimilarity was found between swirls produced in smallest model and those in two larger models; also local scale effect was detected in region of air core; swirl reduction in this region was greatest in smallest model: theoretical explanation is given for local scale effect; behavior of two larger models was similar.
