Alluvial channel resistance related to bed form
Existing data from flume tests over ripple or dune beds are used to investigate variation of resistance to flow with shear velocity; there are certain conditions of flow at which ripples reach maximum stage of development, offering maximum resistance to flow; similar conclusion is made for dune bed form; comparing flows over same bed material, it is suggested that maximum stage of ripple development occurs at same value of shear velocity, irrespective of depth; maximum stage of dune development occurs at same value of ratio of average flow velocity to shear velocity, irrespective of depth; canal data show similar characteristics to flume data, only over limited range.
