Diversion of river Jhelum during construction of Mangla Dam
Monsoon flood peaks as high as 31,000 cu m/sec have been recorded on River Jhelum at Mangla; period of reliable record is 45 yr; overtopping of Mangla Dam during construction could result in very serious flooding and damage downstream, and it was decided that river diversion arrangements should be safe against maximum floods of record; to meet this criterion five 9.5 m diam tunnels were required, and closure dam had to be built across river bed to height of over 60 m in 9 mo; to enable two 100 Mw turboalternator sets to be commissioned by date required, they were built during diversion season by designing section of power station housing them as watertight cofferdam.
