A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Engineering technician, once product of apprentice training program, is now being graduated from well-conceived 2-yr technical courses by growing number of technical institutes; these graduates are finding places in engineering and construction organizations, where they perform many subprofessional tasks formerly allotted to young engineers; substantial number of these technicians are able to become fully qualified engineers; in absence of encouragement from professional societies, ambitious young technicians are apt to look to labor unions in their efforts to achieve status and financial reward; series of steps which ASCE might take to turn better technicians toward professionalism, including re-establishing junior member grade.
