Design and construction of embankments on expansive clay foundations
Methods of stability analysis are outlined involving computation of swelling pressures and volume change due to swelling under given confining pressures, assuming no lateral yield and recourse to effective stress parameters, or to undrained strength-water content relationship corresponding to void ratio at end of swelling process; possibility of progressive failure in highly plastic soils is discussed with special reference to expansive clays; stability of existing embankments is reappraised in light of above principles, with specific examples.
