Lighting brings churches up to date
Ceiling of St. Scholastica Church, Detroit, Mich; adequate lighting (20 ft-c) without having any lighting units or punctures along vaults was specified; first step in final solution was to cover vaults with white plaster with coarse sandpaper finish and painted matte white with 80% reflectance; tungsten halogen 1000-w lamps were chosen as light source; outdoor type of floodlight unit was selected for housing which is described together with other lighting design details; as result, vaulted church is washed at every location with indirect but high-level light free of glare, while vaults lead eye to sanctuary free of visual distractions.
