Japan's pressurised excavator claimed world first
Features of excavator with diameter of 7 m equipped with special device to keep internal air pressure equivalent to normal atmospheric pressure; principal part of new unit is "partial pressure system" which applies compressed air to forward cutting blade only, enabling that section of excavator to withstand full pressure from outside; as result of unusual body design of new unit, excavator holds up surrounding earth during excavating operations, and moves forward by pushing against front end; excavator is designed to meet single track subway tunnel in Japan and is suitable for operation under various geographical or geophysical conditions; unit is tentatively priced at $700,000.
