Modern dredge for marine gravel production
Features of new marine dredging ship Pen Avon which proved successful in applying new principle of 'pushing' up gravel from greater depths where conventional methods are ineffective; 1200 tons of gravel can be loaded in 2 to 3 hr; dredging head of 155-ft pipe is lowered to sea bed and positioned by remote control from bridge; hydraulic pumps powered by main engine, supply high pressure water to dredging head which returns to hold carrying gravel; surplus water goes overboard through spillways.
