Structural behaviour of Bhakra dam
Bhakra Dam is 740 ft high massive straight gravity concrete structure, built at site composed of jointed massive sandstone, interspersed with three significant claystone strata and numerous other weak zones; uplift and seepage measurements clearly establish influence of geological features, and grout and drainage curtain in restricting development of uplift and seepage within permissible values; plumb line observations indicate that observed deflections are significantly less than those theoretically computed by Trial Load Method; results of various measurements indicate that dam and foundations are exhibiting safe expected structural behavior.
