Luossajarvi earth fill dam
Luossajarvi Dam in north Sweden is earth dam built by placing impervious fill as well as filters and rock fill under water, to some extent, under severe climatic conditions with temperatures below -30 C; separation of impervious fill, consisting of silty and sandy moraine, could be kept to minimum, although earth was dumped above water level and pushed under water by bulldozers; since work was carried out day and night during cold winter, earth had no time to freeze at face of borrow pit, which facilitated operations; temperature of earth in situ was also sufficient to prevent material from freezing during transport to dam.
