Construction of rockfill dams under winter conditions
Climate conditions in northern Sweden are characterized by long cold winters and therefore, considering schedule requirements, construction of large dams in this area involves many problems as to planning; several rockfill dams, varying in height from 105 to 30 m, are under construction in this area by Swedish State Power Board; because of short construction season, about 1.4 million cu m of rockfill is designed to be placed in dams during winters; comparative tests, carried out recently with heavy vibrating rollers, show that they produce better compaction than tractors; additional settlements due to sluicing are very small in vibrated rockfills.
