Experience with seepage control measures in earth and rockfill
Measures for control of seepage through and under earth and rockfill dams have advanced significantly in past 30 yr; seepage under dams on deep pervious foundations is controlled by impervious upstream blankets combined with downstream drainage features such as relief wells; experience has demonstrated that underseepage in properly designed system gradually decreases as result of siltation of reservoir; system of impervious upstream blankets and downstream drains similar to that used for underseepage has proved useful for control; leakage along joints or bedding planes in horizontally stratified rock formations requires grouting beyond limits usually prescribed for such work.
