Pongolapoort dam for South African irrigation
Pongolapoort Dam in Natal Province of South Africa will provide storage for 2 million acre-ft of water for adequate irrigation to raise sugar on 150,000 acres of presently unused land; concrete arch dam will rise 293 ft, highest dam in South Africa; tower cranes and cantilever forms are used for placing about 750 cu yd of concrete per day; chilled mixing water and chipped ice are used, for first time in this area, to cool concrete to 55 F; about half of 750,000 cu yd of concrete has been placed; it is expected that new land will accommodate 3000 families in 1969 and support 25,000 Europeans and 75,000 Africans by 1976.
