TVA makes regular foundation uplift pressure measurements at Norris, Wheeler, Hiwassee, Cherokee, Douglas, Fontana, and Boone Dams; all of these, except Wheeler (located on Tennessee River), are located in gorges of tributary rivers; uplift pressure measurements in these dams are usually made twice each year during high and low reservoir levels; these measurements are compared with uplift design assumptions; methods used to improve foundation drainage were washing drainage holes with air and water, redrilling existing holes, drilling new holes in drain curtain, and drilling new holes into high-pressure area; latter two have been most successful.
