Equilibrium flow areas of inlets on sandy coasts
Minimum flow area below mean sea level in entrance channel of tidal inlet on sandy coast is shown to be function of tidal prism; bottom material size, presence or absence of jetties, and magnitude of littoral drift appear not to affect this relationship within accuracy of available data; magnitude of currents through inlet channel are determined by range of tide; data available do not show wide deviations from equilibrium area; reduction in tidal prism of inlet reduces equilibrium flow area at minimum cross section of inlet channel.
