Leakage of water at form ties through wall may be caused by settlement of concrete as it shrinks rather than (as frequently supposed) by careless placing of concrete; tests in England seem to show that water collecting under rigidly fixed form tie, especially near top of high pour, may form cavity that will permit seepage; about half of 283 consultants and contractors queried reported this was no problem; only few said it was common; about half also preferred to use water stops on ties.
