Steel in concrete with blastfurnace slag aggregate
Tests were carried out on rate of weight loss of steel in aqueous extracts from four air-cooled, crystalline blast furnace slags and on steel reinforcement in concrete prisms containing slag as coarse aggregate exposed for 2 yr; results indicate that, under practical conditions negligible corrosion occurs even at 3/4 in. depths of cover; it is concluded that alkalinity produced by reaction of slag with water restricts extent of corrosion and that blast furnace slag may be used satisfactorily as coarse aggregate in reinforced concrete.
